No one ever gets what they want just by wanting it, and someone is always looking to use you for their own ends.

In a time when the work of so many first-time authors still has the cling of not-quite-fully-edited writer's workshop prose, this first work by AJ Kalliver stands out as a tightly written and well thought out powerhouse.This is well-written stuff, and it moves from the first page. It's short, but not too short, and leaves you wanting to know more and to experience more of this character and world. The setting shares the same DNA as other dystopian urban fantasy works, but there are differences here that are meaningful and telling. Kalliver brings forth a vision of his setting that is unique, and tinged with certainty about the time and place that this story takes place in. In the tradition of a great storyteller, we know more about this world than just what the words tell us, as the implied detail and specific points create an almost self-perpetuating world that fills in its own blanks.
The character details are well thought out, and keep you guessing. The differences between right and wrong, morality and law, these are the tensions that drive the story, and it arrives with a full head of steam.

I didn't know what to expect when I purchased Only Echoes Remain. I read the story quickly and then I read it again. I really liked this short story. The pace was quick and the characters were fully formed in the context of the story. I would really have liked this to be longer, as I found myself wondering what would happen next. I would like to see the main character grow and develop, but I guess that is up to the author. The story is worth the money and I will be watching and waiting to see what else this author will write.
This story was definitely worth the money. I found myself asking questions as I read, hoping that the answers were to be found later. I wasn't disappointed. After reading the first paragraph, I was hooked. Told in first person, 'Only Echoes Remain' is a terrific look into the life of a powerful person who immediately made me want to know more about her. Definitely a must read!
The story setting reminded me of a game setting I used to play. The character would not have been out of place there. I liked how the main character approached the world. It was interesting to see her work thru moral problems. The story was written well and I could easily visualize her walking down the street. And getting into trouble. And having an unexpected but interesting way to get out of trouble. I am hoping we see more of this character in future stories. I definately recommend this short story.
I read a lot. In fact, I've read more words than I've spoken aloud, and if you knew me, you'd know how impossible that sounds. Still, I've rarely found an author of DreamSmith's (AJK's fanfiction name) quality.
AJ's characters are more than just words on a page. He has a way of sucking you into his stories, slamming his characters into your brain, and making you care about even some of his small side characters that he intended to only exist for a chapter or two. His worlds are more than fantasy, they are fully formed alternate realities that you might visit if you could. His books are alive in a way that so many aren't.
