I loved this book. LOVED IT. The absolute perfect dark flair with a swaggering, well-developed hero who was oh-so-happy to tame the headstrong and impulsive heroine. The sexual tension built deliciously, the pacing had me glued from page one, the characters flawed (in a very good way) yet relatable. I look for three things when I read a romance novel: tantalizing sex scenes, well-crafted writing, and an engaging plot. Ms. Blake nailed every point perfectly. If you like your cowboys smokin' hot, your dark romance edgy, and your kindle set to flames, this book is a must-read. Five well-earned stars.Product details

This story is a definite page turner, plenty of angst, lots of suspense, some mystery, and steamy scenes. It is a story about revenge, and making amends for the death of a brother, cut down in his prime by a greedy cold-blooded, calculated killer. Mason lived through three years of fighting for the South during the civil war, and then to learn his brother was murdered, shot in the back. Tracking down the doctor who attended him before he died, he contacted Mason and shared information.

Weiser, in a gold mine. John knew Waltze as the Dutchman. Mason is smart, calculated, and knows a greedy man when he sees one, and uses that greed against him. Losing his step-daughter, Annabelle, in a game of poker, gives Mason an advantage with the town’s people, because those in the saloon were witnesses. What starts out as revenge, takes a new twist, because what was an act against one, involves an innocent young woman.
Annabelle is spoiled, mouthy, arrogant, and beautiful. She doesn’t trust her step-father and knows he has nefarious plans to marry and use her. She has no idea he has used her as a pawn in a game of poker and lost her for a week to Mason. Her sensibilities will be shattered quickly from her home to Mason’s, where he will punish her, and yes, rape her in various ways.
The story includes non-consensual, dubious consent, and consent between Mason and Annabelle. There is so much angst between them, and Mason knows just how to stir up her ire. There are many creative forms of punishment and explicit sex scenes. The story is the first book in a new series, and I look forward to the next book.
This western romance was full of sizzling hot action between two fantastic characters. A handsome cowboy home from the war sets his sights on revenge for the death of his brother by a unscrupulous mayor by punishing the mayor's stepdaughter. This is a great read.
What can I say, a feisty beautiful young woman and a hardened cowboy meet up in unusual circumstances. The story is entertaining and the unusual punishments the masterful cowboy comes up with are scorching. A must read. My first time reading this author, but certainly not my last.
If you like the historical westerns-- If you love historical western erotic-- you will LOVE this book and the others in this series. Its got the cowboy, its got the spoiled Eastern rich girl and its got a lot of zizzling . And, its romantic, sort of ) Its a fun read that you will not want to put down.
First you should know this author is one of a very few I still read in the MF erotica or romance category. Frankly I am almost all MM (and Ms. Blake if you would like to write this type of book with two men instead I'd be all.over.it!) nowadays. Women tend to be portrayed as snotty, bratty, spoiled, soft, or like Buffy. There's not a lot of other characterizations and I'm sick of those.
So here she is spoiled and snotty...it sort of goes with punishments however Ms. Blake has made several of her female MC's NOT this way and still getting punished. Those are my yummy one's (like Disciplining the Maid). I didn't really like the female MC here - she grated on me. Alpha guy was fine - pretty typical and I liked when he took what he wanted. Little bit of the anti-hero here so if that's not your thing stay away. Of course most of the actions aroused her most of the time -- she likes pain. I do too. It's not a very harsh capture fantasy to me (though I recognize for many it will be harsher than they like) because it does focus on the romance. After all she doesn't end up a sex slave.
This would be 4 stars except for the heroine. (P.S. I paid full price for this - I did not get an ARC)
It was okay. It's about man bent on revenge. Be aware hero orally and anally rapes heroine. Forces her to orgasm. It's a short novella. Comes with action scenes and an epilogue. Other than one small scene of heroine trying make hero jelouse and payback for something she heard there is no cheating or other OM/OW drama. Hero likes punish heroine with spankings, sex, spurs, clothing pins, hair brush, ect... It's rough beginning for sure but HEA at the end.
Got half way through and simply couldn't keep going. I really wanted to like this because al the erotic elements really push my buttons. But I grew to detest both Annabelle and Mason, but Mason most of all. It's great to have DD combined with elements of dubious consent, but Mason was a bully. The author can't pull off Mason being a bully/kidnapper/rapist while also being a fine upstanding ex confederate soldier. The revenge plot that involves someone innocent is rarely pulled off in any believable way and this rendering is no exception.
Annabelle is pampered and self centered, but she is mostly stupid. The author attempts to make Annabelle naive and innocent and yet the young woman has a magic arousal response that rivals a 16 year old boy. Annabelle, we are asked to believe, is magically masochist and that is why she becomes aroused through a brutal belting after having been forcibly stripped leaving her clothing in tatters. Yeah, that's hot.
I suggest this author not rely on magic to make her characters relatable because honestly, even this kinky reviewer with an enviable arousal response really wanted to beat the snot out of Mason and put a gag on Annabelle.
